URBAN INSECT PESTS

ADVANCES IN THE BIOLOGY AND MANAGEMENT OF MODERN BED BUGS

MANUAL OF APPLIED ENTOMOLOGY

This book brings together subject matter experts to discuss the importance of new technologies, improved designs, environmental modification, and public awareness to sustainably reduce pest infestation. Discusses control strategies that go beyond products, since from an environmental and health perspective it is not always practical to spray chemicals indoors or in urban environments. Reviewing best practice methods for managing insects that are disease vectors, nuisance pests, and the cause of structural damage, this book is a valuable resource for pest control specialists and researchers in entomology, urban pest control, and environmental health.

With 472 pages and more than 60 of the world's most recognized names in the field of bed bug research, this book updates and expands existing material, placing emphasis on the global resurgence of the common bed bug Cimex lectularius and the tropical bed bug Cimex hemipterus. It incorporates a wealth of new data on a wide range of basic and applied research, as well as the medical, legal and regulatory impact of bed bugs.

The objective of this manual is to bring the reader closer to the world of insects, their origin and diversity, their anatomical and physiological characteristics, and the relationships they maintain with the rest of living beings, given that they greatly condition the balance of ecosystems and, ultimately, life as we know it.

Sustainable management strategies

For those who regularly deal with this pest, the chapters cover the history of bed bugs, their global resurgence, their impact on society, their basic biology, how to manage them, and the future of this pest making it a particularly fascinating read.

RECOMMENDED WEBSITES MICROSCULPTURE

FOODSAFETY

Microsculpture is a work by British photographer Levon Biss that presents insect specimens from the Museum of Natural History at the University of Oxford, through images that reveal unexpected and often impressive beauty and make visible the intricate shapes of the insects, what entomologists call their microsculpture. The insect is photographed in approximately 30 different sections. Each section of the body is particularly illuminated with strobe lights to highlight the microsculptural beauty. In order to capture all the information needed to create a fully focused image, the camera is mounted on an electronic rail that will slowly move forward from the front of the insect to the back creating a portfolio of images that have a fine plane of focus. Through several photo overlay processes a single image is created that has full focus on the entire depth of the insect.

Our mission is to share knowledge and experiences in food safety. Non-profit initiative, since April 2012, Blog Food Safety Brazil aims to help small and medium-sized companies in the food production chain to improve their practices. A body of volunteer professionals from academia, industry, public service, auditors and consultants share their experiences, encouraging debate, harmonization and consensus. All the columnists who write on this blog are volunteers and donate their time and experience to help professionals and interested parties know and apply more knowledge about food safety.
